Congress Bridge Bat Colony

Watch 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset.

One of Austin's most unique attractions is the world's largest urban bat colony living under the Congress Avenue Bridge. From March through November, approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at dusk in a spectacular swirling cloud that darkens the sky. The nightly emergence takes about 20-45 minutes and is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in any American city. Viewing is free from the bridge, the trail below, or from kayaks on the water. Bat boat cruises offer an on-the-water perspective with educational narration.
